In the Myrtle Beach area, we know a thing or two about humidity! It affects not only our bodies but also our homes. Cabinets are particularly susceptible to humidity and can become warped or damaged due to the high moisture in the air. Luckily, there are steps you can take to prevent your cabinets from becoming victims of humidity damage.
- Check the humidity level in your home. You can assess the humidity level in your home using a digital thermometer or hygrometer. The ideal humidity level for a home is between 25 and 55 percent relative humidity.
- Use a dehumidifier. If your house always has high humidity, consider using a dehumidifier. Whole-house dehumidifiers are the best bet to keep air flowing throughout your home, but portable dehumidifiers can also be used during short spells of humidity.
- Thoroughly dry dishes. Ensure your cups, dishes, and other serving pieces are completely dry before placing them in the cabinets. Excess moisture can’t evaporate in closed spaces and can damage your cabinets.
- Maximize airflow around cabinets. Do what you can to circulate air around cabinets. Use the oven fan in the kitchen, and don’t place appliances that steam directly under cabinets. Bathroom fans should also be used to suck out extra moisture. The more airflow available in your space, the less likely humidity will affect your cabinets.
- Check your plumbing. Regularly inspect the plumbing in your kitchen and bathroom to ensure it is in good condition. Small leaks or sweaty pipes can wreak havoc on your cabinets, and it’s best to address plumbing issues sooner rather than later.
- Use silica packets. Those silica gel packets that you find in shoe boxes, purses, and other items are used to trap moisture. Simply place the silica packet in a cabinet and let it do the work. Change your packet as needed.
