What to Do with Old Kitchen Cabinets

Myrtle Beach Cabinets

Upgrading your kitchen to a new set of cabinets, but not sure what to do with your old cabinets? Sure, you could just send them to the landfill, however, there are several other ways to give your cabinets new life. Consider the following options for what to do with your old kitchen cabinets:

  1. Donate. Nonprofit organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore and the Salvation Army, will take cabinets in good condition to resell to others. In some locations, charities will even come to your home to remove the old cabinets for you. Not only will you feel good about helping others, but you’ll also receive a tax deduction for your donation.
  2. Recycle. If your cabinets are made of unfinished lumber, they can be taken to your local recycling center and recycled as wood. Be sure to check that the recycling center takes lumber, and not just tree branches and clippings. Before bringing the cabinets to be recycled, remove all hardware and shelf coverings.
  3. Upcycle. In addition to recycling, you can also reuse your kitchen cabinets in other parts of your home. Install them in your garage or basement for extra functionality and storage, or disassemble them and build a new bench, desk, or art project. The possibilities for repurposing kitchen cabinets are endless!
  4. Sell or Give Away. You may also have luck in selling or giving away your old cabinets to neighbors online through Facebook Marketplace, Buy Nothing Groups, or Craigslist. In your listing, specify that the buyer is responsible for pick-up, the date the cabinets are available, and the price (if applicable).

The key is to plan well ahead of time so that you’re ready to go once the cabinets are removed. And if none of the options above work out, you can always take the old cabinets to the nearest landfill. If your vehicle isn’t large enough to transport the cabinets, contact a local junk removal company to dispose of the cabinets.
